I turned 58 this year, which seems absolutely insane to say out loud, but here I am. I shared this back in February with my subscribers but I think this little tidbit of collected thoughts, need a permanent spot on the blog. Here’s a few things I’ve learned in my *cough cough* 58 years.
.
1. What the fuck is age besides a number?
It’s time in. It’s living life. It’s consuming love and enjoying the passage of time. It’s knowing more, and doing better. Giving the actual number too much energy isn’t going to do anyone any good. Might give you a few more stress lines, instead of laugh lines. And god knows, we all need more laughs and the lines that go with them.
2. Anti-aging is bullshit.
I am all about doing the things you want to make yourself feel better. Botox, filler, plastic surgery, weight loss, divorce! Whatever it is just make sure you are doing it for YOU. We are conditioned to believe that women grow old and men get better with age. Fuck that. You know who came up with that idea? Sure as hell not a woman. The anti-aging industry is a monster machine that feeds off of the insecurities of women. Just don’t buy ‘all in’. Listen, I love me a good serum. Facials? Yup! Spa days? Bring em! Nip and tuck? Why not. Just make sure that YOU are the reason for the changes you are making.
3. Time goes by fast. Like real fast.
You know how I know? I’m now a grandma. I remember when my son was five. In a blink of an eye things change. The only thing that doesn’t change, is time. I’ve also realized that I’ve said no to people and situations so many times out of either fear, or just, not right now. Now, those people and some of those opportunities and situations are gone. Or I thought I should wait for the ‘right’ time. The ‘perfect’ time. When all things line up, then I can do ‘that’ thing. Hear me out on this one, just do the things. All of the things. Because just like that, you may not be able to.
4. Find your people and keep them close.
I have been blessed to have a circle of loved ones who are my true people. They know me and they love me. On all the days, good and bad. Tell them about your dreams, thoughts, fears and insights. Even if it sounds crazy. Your people will walk with you through the hard times, and celebrate with you in the good times.
5. Family is everything. Friends included.
Family also includes the friends who are your family. Your chosen family. They are the people you would fight to the death for, knowing they would do the same. Nurture those relationships. These ones shape who you are.
6. Women need girlfriends.
This is an important one. I am again blessed to have a crew of women who have been with me for my lifetime. Or close to it. They understand me. How I tick. How I retreat. How I love. Without explanation. Women need women. What we get out of a girlfriend relationship is completely different from all other relationships. They are gold. Hold them true to your heart.
